Full Remote - IT - Quality Assurance / Testing - Contract - Job ID: 26-158894
Title: Design Systems Engineer (FrontEnd)
Location: Remote
Duration: Initial 6-month contract with extensions
Compensation: $65/hour – $73/hour
Work Requirements: US Citizen, GC Holders or Authorized to Work in the U.S.
Position Overview
We are seeking a technically strong engineer to support the development and quality of the foundational design system and reusable component framework being built for Omni. This design system will provide the shared UI components, patterns, and standards used to create consistent digital experiences across Omni and the applications that rely on it.
Because changes within a shared design system can affect multiple products and development teams, this role will ensure components are functional, visually accurate, accessible, and stable before they are released for broader use.
The position is open to candidates from either a frontend engineering or SDET background. The ideal candidate has meaningful experience building, maintaining, or deeply testing design systems and is comfortable owning hands-on quality and testing responsibilities.
Role emphasis: This is not a traditional manual QA role. The engineer will work closely with frontend engineers, designers, product teams, and QA partners to understand how components are built, how they should behave, and how changes may affect downstream applications.
Responsibilities
- Support the quality and reliability of the foundational design system and shared component library being developed for Omni.
- Test reusable UI components before they are released for use across products and applications.
- Validate component appearance, behavior, states, and interactions against Figma designs and documented requirements.
- Use Storybook to review and test components across different states, configurations, and use cases.
- Build and maintain automated component, functional, and visual regression tests.
- Identify unintended visual or behavioral changes before they affect downstream applications.
- Partner with frontend engineers and designers to resolve inconsistencies between design specifications and implemented components.
- Evaluate how component changes may affect the products and teams consuming the design system.
- Perform accessibility testing and help ensure components align with WCAG standards.
- Validate responsive behavior and cross-browser compatibility.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and frontend development workflows.
- Help establish scalable quality standards and testing practices as the design system grows.
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews, sprint planning, defect analysis, and release-readiness activities.
- Document component behaviors, test coverage, defects, and quality expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Experience working directly with an enterprise design system, shared component library, or UI platform.
- Hands-on experience with Storybook and Figma.
- Strong understanding of reusable UI components and modern frontend development practices.
- Experience building, maintaining, or deeply testing components in React, Angular, or a similar frontend framework.
- Experience with component testing, frontend automation, or visual regression testing.
- Experience with tools such as Chromatic, Percy, or a similar visual testing platform.
- Working knowledge of JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Experience with testing frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Jest, Selenium, or similar tools.
- Understanding of accessibility testing and WCAG standards.
- Ability to assess how changes to shared components may affect downstream products and applications.
- Willingness to take direct ownership of hands-on testing and quality responsibilities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, design, product, and QA teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or maintaining reusable components within a large-scale design system.
- Previous experience as a frontend engineer, design systems engineer, UI platform engineer, or frontend-focused SDET.
- Experience establishing component testing or visual regression strategies.
- Knowledge of design tokens, component governance, and design-to-development workflows.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience supporting a design system consumed by multiple development teams or enterprise applications.
- Experience with Java or C# is helpful but not required.
